Traditional condiments swapped out for spicier alternative in BBQ season
September 21, 2016
This year has seen a big change in the condiments world, with new sauces being released each month, it turns out the taste buds of the British are beginning to favour a spicier alternative to the traditional condiments which we would normally bring out for a good old barbeque!
The condiments which have seen a decline include the classic tomato ketchup, brown sauce, salad cream and mayonnaise, these have been swapped out for spicy sauces, such as tomato relishes and hot sauces.
The hot sauce sector has seen a great 7.2% increase over the last 12 months, while ketchup and brown sauce have seen a decline of 3.7%, mayonnaise a decrease of 2.8%, and salad cream sales have seen the biggest drop, with a massive 8.6%.
Although sales of these condiments have dropped, research revealed that those still purchasing the classic sauces have begun to favour cheaper, own brand products as opposed to big name brands.
“Own label has become more affordable. Families have particularly made the most of the savings by buying own-label alternatives – especially in core sectors like ketchup,” commented Amelia Hewitt of Kantar Worldpanel.
She added, “Traditional staples are finding life tough as shoppers seek out both international and spicier modern variants.”
This year saw more than 171 new condiments brought into the biggest supermarkets, which more than 50% of these products were chilli or barbeque based flavours. This trend is thought to be linked to the increase of street foods and people being introduced to more adventurous international cuisines, and therefore developing their taste buds further.
“People are eating out more and exposing themselves to more exciting and innovative dishes, which is seeing them get more creative and experimental whilst cooking at home,” noted the brand manager for Hellmann’s, Hannah Webb.
So when you plan your next barbeque or cook-out, make sure to cater for those with a spicier palette with some adventurous condiments!
